Even though we're still so early in the year, I feel confident in saying the Dell XPS 16 is a contender for my favorite laptop of 2024. I thoroughly enjoyed my time with it. Like I said earlier, it feels like Dell read my review from 2023 and implemented changes solely to make me happy.
When we pointed our Klein 10-A colorimeter at the display and got to work, we discovered that the Framework Laptop 13 (2023) screen offers an average max brightness of 465 nits, peaking at 501 nits in the upper-right quadrant. That's better than advertised, and plenty bright for a laptop screen that doesn't support HDR.
Dell's machine is fantastic for creative work, but if you're looking for an alternative, then I recommend the ThinkPad X1 Extreme from Lenovo. Like the XPS 16, this laptop has a lot of similarities with its contemporary from its 4K display to its room-filling speakers.
If that isn’t enough, Dell packs a USB-A and Ethernet adapter in with the XPS 15. Like its predecessor, the 2023 Dell XPS 15’s two 2.5-watt woofers and two 1.5W tweeters deliver loud and punchy sound that remains clear even at high volume. There’s great separation between lows, mids and highs, enabling even the subtlest sounds to come through.

The “ultrabook” moniker was originally coined by Intel in 2012 and used to refer to a set of premium, super-thin laptops that met the chipmaker’s predefined standards. Much of this occurred as the PC world was first catching up to the original MacBook Air.
The 13.5-inch screen on the 2023 Framework Laptop 13 has the same 3:2 aspect ratio (2,256 x 1,504 pixels) as its predecessor, but a new matte coating is designed to make it more usable in a broader range of lighting conditions. Regrettably, your options to customize it remain pretty limited.
As for competitors, the Razer Blade 14 is another outstanding gaming laptop. This powerhouse machine comes with a blistering 240Hz QHD panel, and you can pair it with a RTX 4070 for $2,700, which hits a nice sweet spot between price vs performance.

The HP Pavilion can get you the latest Intel processor, 16GB of RAM of a 90 Hz, 2880 x 1800 OLED display. You can go lower for the same design, but with a Core i5, 8GB of RAM and a non-OLED screen. We liked the Pavilion for its great port selection, lovely screen and strong performance, all at a value price.
MacBooks are some of the most praised laptops among consumers and the tech industry. There's a good reason for this. Apple consistently makes top-tier hardware. Even when they're mediocre by Apple standards, MacBooks are solid picks regardless of their quirks.

When we pointed our Klein 10-A colorimeter at the display and got to work, we discovered that the Framework Laptop 13 (2023) screen offers an average max brightness of 465 nits, peaking at 501 nits in the upper-right quadrant. That's better than advertised, and plenty bright for a laptop screen that doesn't support HDR.
