Chianti is Italy's most famous wine. Officially demarcated by Cosimo Medici III in the early 18th Century, the Chianti viticultural zone remains a source of world-class wines two hundred years later. Its vineyards, which cover the hillsides of Prato, Florence, Arezzo, Pistoia, Pisa and Siena, yield more wine than any other Italian DOC.
White wines are made from grapes grown within the boundaries of the Chianti zone, but must be labeled as Toscana IGT, Colli della Toscana Centrale IGT – based on the main production areas of Chianti – or, if grown in the Greve Valley, Alta Valle della Greve IGT.
Chianti's winemaking zone is located between the cities of Florence (to the north) and Siena (to the south), and stretches into these provinces plus Prato, Arezzo, Pistoia and Pisa. Its 13,800 hectares of vineyards (2019 figures; 34,000 acres) yield more than any other Italian DOC, producing around 75 million litres (20 million gallons) per year.
