 · Advances in theoretical calculations boosted the searches for high temperature superconductors, such as sulfur hydrides and rare-earth polyhydrides. However, the required extremely high pressures for stabilizing these superconductors handicapped further implementations. Based upon thorough structural searches, we identified series of unprecedented superconducting technetium-borides at moderate ...

 · A room-temperature superconductor, if one could be found, would be amazing. Several research groups have been looking for one by following a 2004 proposal by Neil Ashcroft: In a pressurized hydrogen-rich material, vibrations of the lightweight atoms could nudge the electrons into Cooper pairs at high temperatures. Sulfur hydride, for example, was found to superconduct at 203 K (see Physics ...

Superconductivity above the temperature of liquid nitrogen is called high temperature superconductivity (HTSC). “High temperature” may seem like a misrepresentation; to anyone who lives in the desert, -196°C seems pretty cold. Yttrium-barium-copper-oxide superconductor (YBCO) is a high-temperature superconductor.
Even as that paper was being retracted due to concerns about the validity of some of its data, Dias published a second paper claiming a similar breakthrough: a superconductor that works at high temperatures, but somewhat lower pressures. Shortly afterward, that got retracted as well.
Though the superconductivity happened under extremely high pressure, the result still represents a big step toward creating superconductivity at room temperature—the ultimate goal for scientists to be able to use this phenomenon for advanced technologies.

Abolish all resistance! Could superconductors save data centers?
 · The current record for superconductivity is a temperature of around 140°K (-133.2°C/-207.7 ° F). That 140°K is still a chilly -130°C, but it’s a temperature higher than the -200°C (-328°F) boiling point of liquid nitrogen. Practical superconductors have to be supercold, or they “quench” and abruptly lose their magic.

Unconventional superconductors are any superconducting materials that don’t conform to what we know about BCS theory. But testing materials for unconventional superconductors involved making them in a lab and then putting them in near absolute zero temperatures. This was just not possible for a long time.
Scientists have identified the first unconventional superconductor that you can find in nature. Conventional superconductors follow a specific, well known paradigm called BCS. Miassite does occur naturally, but this test was on a pure, lab-made sample.

As stated above, the thermal properties of superconductors indicate that there is a gap in the distribution of energy levels available to the electrons, and so a finite amount of energy, designated as delta (Δ), must be supplied to an electron to excite it.
The thermal conductivity in the normal state ( Kn) approaches the thermal conductivity in the superconducting state ( Ks) as the temperature ( T ) approaches the transition temperature ( Tc) for all materials, whether they are pure or impure.
