One of the keys to qualifying for Boston is running a fast, USATF-certified course with a high probability of running your goal time. Typically, the races with the most qualifiers are the New York City Marathon and the Chicago Marathon, and, of course, Boston itself, but that's largely based on the volume of runners in those races.
After the registration for Boston 2020 was complete, here are some statistics about qualifying times: A total of 24,127 runners were accepted as qualified athletes. Amongst these runners, there was a total of 600+ races used to run their Boston Marathon qualifying times. The total number of Boston qualifying times submissions was 27,288.
As you can see by the numbers and the craze behind Boston Marathon qualifying times, this is far from a small race. Bennet Beach holds the record for most consecutive Boston Marathons. In 2012, he set the record after he finished his 45th consecutive Boston Marathon. At the time, the record was held by Neil Weygandt with 44 straight races.

In contrast, in 2017, according to MarathonGuide, 4,478 qualified for the 2019 race. (The qualifying window for Boston runs from September to September.) In other words, with stricter time standards 484 fewer runners qualified, or roughly 11 percent less.
The marathon follows a USATF-certified course and can be used as a qualifier for the Boston Marathon. The event features a pre-race campfire, and includes a 2 Mile Fun Run, 8K Trail Run, 10K and Half Marathon in addition to the marathon itself.
Runners are qualifying for the 2020 Boston Marathon at close to the same rates at which they qualified for the 2019 race—even though the time standards are five minutes faster across all age groups. That makes it likely that not every applicant for the 2020 race will be accepted into the marathon during the annual September registration period.
