At the start of 2024, energy bills went up by 5% compared to the previous Ofgem energy price cap. It meant the average household's annual energy bill would come in at £1,928 a year - £94 more than it would have under the October to December cap. But on 23 February, the energy regulator announced its energy cost cap would tumble 12% from April.
This series brings together all documents relating to Quarterly Energy Prices statistical publication. Quarterly Energy Prices covers energy prices for domestic and industrial consumers, for all the major fuels. Road fuel and petrol prices are also covered, along with comparisons of fuel prices in the European Union and G7 countries.
The energy regulator Ofgem puts a cap on the amount that energy providers can charge per unit of power every three months. Its price cap for the summer quarter will be announced by 24 May, a few weeks after the deadline for its consultation on the future of the cap.
The amount varies depending on where in Great Britain the customer lives. There has been anger about charges going up - in many areas, the charge has doubled over the past two years - and the inability to reduce these fixed fees. At present, they mean you pay around £300 a year before you've even used any energy.

The consumer champion Martin Lewis is among those urging people to get their phones, pens and notepads out so that they benefit fully from the 12.3% cut to the Ofgem energy price cap, which is altered quarterly.
From April 1, the average energy bill is set to fall by 12.3 per cent, with a predicted fall of 7.7 per cent to follow in July. However, by October 1, the cap is forecast to increase by 4.6 per cent, with another 0.2 per cent increase at the start of 2025. This equates to paying £84.80 on January 1 2025 for what you would have paid £100 for now.
October's figures will be released on 27 August. Commenting on the figures, Cornwall Insight's principal consultant, Dr Craig Lowrey, said: “Forecasts show energy bills returning to their lowest levels in over two years, providing a much-needed respite for a nation struggling with a cost of living crisis.

The Energy Price Guarantee finished in June 2023, and the Ofgem cap once again became responsible for deciding how much customers can be charged. From January, Ofgem says the typical annual household bill will go up to £1,928 from £1,834, a rise of £94 or 5%.
Energy prices soared after Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, so in October ministers said household bills would be limited by a temporary government guarantee instead. Under this, a typical household's annual gas and electricity bill stayed below £2,500 despite Ofgem's cap increasing above this level during the period.

 · Right now, it's possible to undercut the Price Cap with E.on Next's Pledge tariff. It promises to remain roughly 3% below the Price Cap for a year (so £50 a year at typical use), so when the Cap drops 12% on Monday 1 April, so too will this tariff. Therefore if you're going to remain on the Price Cap, it's worth considering this option.

It expects the July figure to come in 13% below April's cap at £1,465 for a typical household. The Energy Price Guarantee finished in June 2023, and the Ofgem cap once again became responsible for deciding how much customers can be charged. From January, Ofgem says the typical annual household bill will go up to £1,928 from £1,834, a rise of £94 or 5%.
